The Dutchies are Coming!

Niels and I have been working like crazy to get the house ready to accomodate the influx of Dutchies arriving TOMORROW from The Netherlands. We have prepared Bailey for the fact that for the next two weeks, our house will be a little bit of Holland in Canton--complete with freaky deaky Dutch-speaking, as Jared would say.

A good number of Niels' family is arriving to start the wedding festivities. We look forward to putting them to work so we can finalize our wedding details. Nothing like a deadline! :-)

We can't wait to see so many of our loved ones at our open house one week from today!!!!

For those who are driving...

With gas prices on the rise around the world and having people coming from around the world, we thought it was a nice idea to give everybody a bit of a perspective on current gasp(p)rices from the home-towns of some of our guests.

Akron/Canton, OH - $2.89

Cleveland, OH - $2.89

Toronto: $.99 CAD/L = $3.61 USD

Grand Rapids, MI - $3.19 USD

Oshkosh, WI - $3.29 USD

Minneapolis, MN- $3.04 USD

Stamford, CT - $3.08

Helmond, The Netherlands - 1.39 Euros/Liter = $7.23/gallon

As you can see, even the highest US gas prices aren't even half of what they pay in the Netherlands. With roughly the same pay and house-prices that are double to triple what they are in the US it gives us something to think about the next time we're complaining about high prices here in the US.

Note that pretty much all major gas-companies offer an EXCELLENT money-back program now. It's called: stocks...

Cheers!

Two weeks to go...

We're getting close. It's only two weeks until we get married and only 1 week until the 1st (and biggest) Dutch contingent will arive. All of the important wedding stuff is done. We're just prettying things up for the program, the music listing and printing and selecting photos for use on (and after) July 29.

The house is getting closer and closer to be able to host (for Thu / Fri) 11 people. We're getting more and more projects done, but plenty of work remains to be done. Hey, that's what the 'Daddy Do' list is for. Sorry Dad, but it is growing a bit...

We are looking forward to the time after the wedding when we'll again have some time to just 'hang' and do some sightseeing in- and around NE Ohio (e.g. Amish country just south of us).

We're praying for sanity in these last two weeks and for all who read this: please pray for 75/80F weather (with a slight breeze) instead of the currently forecasted sunny, hot and humid 93F.

Hope to see you all soon!!

The Things Behind My Ring

Niels did an amazing job picking out my ring. I can't imagine anything more perfect for our story. I love symbolism and in many ways, my ring symbolizes our unique story. In fact, the more I gaze upon it--and yes, because I am a bride, I have spent much time admiring my sweetie's token of intent--the more symbolism I see.
The center diamond is an Asscher cut, which was developed in Amsterdam. It's not a very common cut, so even though it was our first choice, we wondered if we would be able to find one. What makes the Asscher cut unique is that it focuses the eye inward, inside the heart of the diamond, rather that creating a lot of outward sparkle. Our hope in live as Christians is to draw the eyes of others to our hearts, the core of who we are, rather than on what is outward and fading.
The center diamond is circled by an "O" of smaller diamonds, which symbolizes the need of community to support and encourage us as we begin this new chapter in our life. Of course, "O" can also represent Ohio, which is where we are beginning our marriage.
There are arrows on each side, which symbolize past, present and future.
Three is an important number to Niels and I, symbolizing the fact that a marriage needs three people to make it strong: the bride, the groom, and the God who brought them together. The center stone represents God, and the two much smaller stones on the front and back (not pictured) symbolize Niels and I, who were brought together by God, even though we were born oceans apart. (Again with the "O").

Because Niels grew up in The Netherlands, known for its tulips and other flowers, it's only fitting the my ring would have a tulip on it.
And if you flip the ring around, the other side looks like the Eiffel Tower, which is where Niels proposed to me.

License to Wed

We are officially licensed to wed. We were tempted to elope when we went to the courthouse, but decided we could wait a few more days.

The courthouse itself was gorgeous! We admired the glass and jade atrium before signing in with the clerk. We passed them looking at old marriage registrations from the 20's. Lots of rubberworkers in Akron at that time! Most of the brides were 18-20 though we saw one as young as 14! Wonder where those couples are now...

The process was fairly quick, even with the special circumstances with Niels not being an American citizen.

One more check off our dwindling to do list!

Our sauna arrived!!

Thank you Dad and Carole for the wonderful gift. Yesterday they delivered the sauna in a big box and today Jen and I put it together. After about 1 hour we fully assembled it.

It is beautiful. A nice size corner sauna that can fit three. We even tried it out a bit, even though we currently only have it on a 15-amp circuit instead of the 20-amp it requires. We'll fix that soon... ;-)

We love the gift and are truly grateful for it.

Update: July 8: yesterday we first used the sauna after upgrading the electrical circuit. It works!! We both put on our bading suits (not married yet... ;-) and did a 30-min session at 140F/60C and after 20mins we were both sweating like crazy.

Catan Training

To prepare for our First Annual International Catanarama (FAIC), we found some great sites that you should visit to get up to speed, catch up or just enhance your already existing skills.

The site to start is (of course): http://www.catan.com/

However, for a full on-line tutorial here are some REALLY cool links:
After this you should be at least prepared to start playing. Don't worry about winning. This is an event in the spirit of Pierre de Coubertin (founder of the modern Olympic Games) so playing is more importatnt than winning... ;-)
